In a moving exchange captured at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival, seasoned critic Peter Krausz—long‑time host of Movie Metropolis and former Chair of the Australian Film Critics Association—sat down with Eddy Boas to explore the heart of Reflections of Courage. Reflections of Courage tells the powerful life story of Dutch-born Eddy Boas (born 1940). At just four and a half years old, Eddy spent 14 months inBergen-Belsen concentration camp alongside his family-his father, mother, and older brother, who was five years his senior. According to Yad Vashem,”the fact that the Boas family entered Bergen-Belsen as a family of four and left as a family of four is unique.”

After returning to Holland on June 13, 1945—exactly 624 days after their deportation-they found themselves with no home, no family, no belongings, and no money. Tragedy struck again when Eddy’s father passed away in August 1948.

In January 1954, Eddy’s widowed mother emigrated to Australia, where Eddy began a new chapter in his life. Eddy left school at 15 and initially chose to block out his Holocaust memories, never speaking of his past during his working years.

However, everything changed in 2001 with his mother’s passing at age 89. The following year, he began writing his memoirs, and after 15 years of research, published his book ‘I’m Not a Victim I Am a Survivor’  in 2017.

Since then, Eddy has shared his story with audiences around the world-talking in Australia, the USA, the UK, and Holland about his resilience and survival.

In 2025, his story was brought to the screen in the documentary Reflections of Courage.

Just like his book, the documentary highlights Eddy’s resilience and is both compelling and accessible. It moves audiences to tears and laughter alike.
